Selecting your next used car is a big decision, one that will have an immediate impact on your finances as well as your day-to-day activities. Naturally, it's important to make this decision only after doing your homework and thoroughly vetting your options.
One thing we always recommend to our customers is clear, open communication. Don't be afraid to ask your sales rep any questions that come to mind, and to push until you get clear answers.
To help you out, we've put together a quick list of things you should always ask when you're at the used car dealership. Hopefully, these questions will empower you to feel truly confident in your purchase decision.
What to Ask at the Used Car Dealership
Can I take this vehicle for a test drive? There's never any reason to buy a vehicle without driving it first. You need to know that it's comfortable and that it drives smoothly. You need a chance to make sure it feels good and sounds okay when it's in operation. Always insist on a test drive, ensuring you have a good sense of what driving the car's really going to be like.
May I see a copy of the vehicle history? Your used car dealership should be willing to furnish you with a vehicle history, either from CARFAX or a comparable service. This report will give you a rundown of any accidents or major body work in the vehicle's past, helping you to make an informed purchase decision. Be wary of any used car dealership that doesn't offer you a vehicle history! (Note: You can buy your own vehicle history, but a reputable dealership should give you one without charging.)
Will you show me some comparable vehicles? Do you have your eye on a midsize SUV, or two-door sports car? Make sure you explore all your options within your chosen category. For instance, if you've been thinking seriously about a Hyundai Elantra, ask the sales rep to see some additional vehicles that might be similar. Again, it's all about surveying your options and making a fully informed purchase decision.
What are my options for financing? Generally speaking, you're going to want to have some financing options in mind even before you visit the used car dealership. Check out the available solutions at your local bank or credit union. With that said, most dealerships will have some financing packages of their own, and it never hurts to consider them.
What about warranties and guarantees? Not all used cars are going to come with warranties, but some dealerships will offer you some basic consumer protections. Again, it never hurts to ask, and to know what your options are.
